JMMC/Hilton Kingston Tarmac Sprint #2
From Motorsports writer Dean Corrodus BR>Photos by Shane Munroe, Greg Chong and others
The Jamaica Millennium Motoring Club/Hilton Kingston Hotel Sprint #2 will take place on Sunday, May 18, starting at 9.30 a.m. at the National Stadium in Kingston, Jamaica. The event is being organized by Team Xpress Racing with chief organizer Rosie Jadusingh. The speed bumps are being removed and paved over to make the racing surface more acceptable...lessons learnt from the first event. There is also a new track design being considered..more on this later, but a layout quite similar to the Ironshore track with a lane change is being considered. Circuit drivers are encouraged to make use of this event as a final shakedown test for the 1st leg of the Caribbean Circuit Racing championships to be held on May 25 at Dover Raceway.
Sprint #1 winner Tarik Minott’s giant killing Suzuki Ignis is in Barbados along with the Ford Focus World rally car of Gary Gregg, so Minott has to make do this time around with his former ride, the Miphone Toyota Starlet with a 20 valve “blacktop” version of Toyotas venerable 4a-ge engine running its power to the ground through a close ratio gearbox. It seems that if left unchecked, Toyota’s will rule the roost, as 2nd place finisher at the last meet and JA4 class winner, Thomas Hall, driving a turbo-charged Toyota Starlet, though his day job is as a Mercedes salesman at the Issa Transport Group’s Camp Road compound, will no doubt again challenge for top honors after a great showing in the recent Volkswagen Tarmac rally #2 held in Mile Gully, Manchester.
Minott, Hall & McDowell in action
A bevy Hondas will try to unseat the fancied Toyotas at the meet, led by Lisa Bowman-Lee in her Integra and ably supported by husband Paul who shares the car, Peter Jaggon in a CRX, Wayne Wallace and Christopher Wright sharing a Civic coupe and Brian Foster in a Civic hatchback.
The Team Xpress camp will themselves field Julian Gordon sharing his VW Golf with Freddy Chin, Andy Williams in a Mitsubishi Mirage RS and Rohan Clarke in his Pulsar, while Team Autosource will have Dion Gardner and Rhonda Nichols in a Mirage RS. Two time 2008 rally winner Richard Rerrie will challenge for the top spot in his Puma/Leroy’s Auto Glass/KIG/1-888-Wrecker Subaru Impreza WRX, fresh from a scintillating performance at the recently held Red Bull Formula 1 Urban Run & Auto Fair held I Jamaica’s capital on May 4.
Team Mack Attack will once again bring out its big gun, the Hyundai Coupe F2 kit car, which was driven progressively harder as the day went on at the first sprint event. With another tarmac rally under his belt, pilot Gordon McDowell is gradually getting used to the performance capabilities of this beast, as team mates Michael & Michelle Delfosse work feverishly to effect repairs to their Mirage and Gemini respectively to make the meet.

Rerrie on the road, Wallace & Lee
The event is shaping up to be a manufacturer’s battle between Toyota, Mitsubishi, Subaru, Volkswagen, Honda, Nissan and Hyundai all being well represented. Which one will leave the stadium complex with bragging rights and new found fans, or satisfied loyalists, is left to be seen.
Admission is $300 for adults, with food and drink on sale.

Heroes of Speed Race Report
The exciting Jamaica Race Driver’s Club Heroes of Speed event was run on Heroes Day, Monday 16 October 2006, at the famous Dover raceway in St. Ann, and was a thrilling affair from start to finish.
The action started off with the
Improved Production race that saw Matthew Gore in the Team MoBay Racing
Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution II starting at the back of the field, and
charging through to win ahead of brother Doug Gore in his Motor Sales
& Service Ltd/Walkerswood Caribbean Foods/Slam Condoms Mitsubishi
Lancer Evolution VIII and Teddy Burton in his MAD racing prepared
Honda Civic.
In the IP35 class, Terron Ramdon in the Finish
Line AutoMazda 323 copped the top position followed by Lisa Bowman Lee
(P&L Racing Khumo Tires Honda Integra) and Dean
Corrodus in the Mountain Dew Honda Civic Type R. Rohan Clarke took his Team Xpress Nissan Pulsar to the top of the IP39 podium and he was followed by Salvador Solis in the Chrysalis Communications/Racing Syndicate Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution and Noel Golding in the GRD Racing Suzuki Swift. In the second IP29 race, Douglas Gore took first followed by Terron Ramdon, who also led the IP35 charge with Lisa Bowman Lee hot on his heels for 2nd in that class. Rohan Clarke capped the double with 1st in IP39 followed by Richard Chan (Toyota Corolla GT) and Keith Saunders (Chevrolet Chevette).
Douglas Gore continued his dominance with two wins in the Modified Production category. In the first race, Willy Worton was second and Mike Causwell in a Ford Escort 3rd and first in the MP2 class. Paul Lee was 1st in MP1, with Noel Golding second and Marck Carey 3rd. In race two it was Causwell 2nd overall (1st in class MP2) and Paul Lee third across the line and 1st in class MP1. Richard Chan was 2nd in class MP1 in this event.
Gore looked set to win all the events he entered when he took the win in the GTS class, turning the tables on Peter “Bull” Thompson in his Mazda RX7. This was perhaps the most exciting event of the day, as Gore’s evolution was faster on the straights but Thompson’s Mazda far superior in cornering and braking. It was a neck and neck tussle, but Gore managed to keep the fire breathing Mazda behind.
In race 2 in the GTS class, Gore was leading Thompson when the Bull tried a late braking maneuver going into the downhill, off camber, Carib Cement corner. Both cars exited the corner side by side. Thompson ran out of road and was forced to turn into the right rear wheel of Gore, making wheel-to-wheel contact and spinning him out in the process. The contact damaged Gore’s rear suspension and he was out of the race. Worton went on to finish 2nd and Causwell 3rd. The incident caused a malicious, untrue rumor to be spread with regards to Gore’s reaction, but this was a gross misrepresentation of the facts, as Thompson was in Gore’s pit at the time making a public apology to him.
The street class Improved Production 45 class saw the largest field of any race at the event, with lots of very fast cars breaking out of class as they exceeded the time restriction put on the class.
Race 1 was awarded to Joel Jackson (Jetcon Nissan
Pulsar VZR) with Mario Scott 2nd (Toyota Corolla Levin) and Charles
Maxwell 3rd (Ethanol Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution VI) after the first 5
cars across the line were adjudged to have broken out. Race two saw
Monique Gibbs take her Federal Tires Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution VIII to
the winner’s enclosure, as she was careful to stay within the time
restrictions this time, having also crossed the line first in the previous
race. She was followed by Downie and Leroy Spence (Racing Syndicate
Honda Integra Type R) in 3rd.
The day was very successful by
all indications and was heightened by the presence of champion athlete and
100m world record holder Asafa Powell making the trophy presentations as a special guest of the JRDC. Event sponsors Tyre Warehouse, King Midas Mufflers and Miphone were on board for this the season finale to a well run 2006 circuit-racing season.
Results are provisional.

JMMC Kir Dex/Mountain Dew National Championship Sprint #5 Report & Results
The fifth sprint in the JMMC Kir Dex/Mountain Dew National Championship
took place in the stiflingly hot and humid orange groves of Bog Walk on Sunday,
September 10, 2006, as the Tru Juice/Kir Dex Transportation Services time trials
returned to the normally misty and cool St. Catherine farmland.
Gary Gregg, in his Ford Focus WRC, returned to local Racing with a seemingly
easy win over his competitors. Although he had a stall in the chicane on the back
straight on his third timed run, his second run of 1 min 53.560 sec was enough
for him to claim victory at this event. Consolidating his lead in the JA8 class
and overall sprint championship was Jeffrey Panton in the Mitsubishi Lancer
Evolution 9, sounding very menacing as its radical turbo anti-lag system sent
shock waves resounding through the normally quiet countryside. Doug Gore in his
Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution 8 fought hard to stay in contention and finished
third with a best time of 1 min 58.110 sec. He was followed in class by Peter
Moodie Jr, Mark Evans, Leslie Madden Jr and Garth Moodie.
The JN8 class saw the debut of Oliver Townsend's Subaru Impreza WRX, and
what a debut it was, as "OT" took his car straight to victory lane with an
impressive drive to post a best time of 2 min 06.890 sec on his third timed
run. Junior Barnes was second in class in his Evolution 5, while Dave Lee, who
was also debuting his new Evolution 8, rounded out the class in third place.
The JA7 class had the father and son pair of Noel Golding Snr and Jr
battling it out amongst themselves, with the younger being victorious in the
shared GRD Racing Suzuki Cultus 4WD Turbo.
Despite completing only one timed run successfully due to various
mechanical problems including a broken driveshaft on his third run, Thomas Hall
who appeared with new graphics on his Toyota Starlet Gt Turbo was still able to
take home the JA4 class, with brothers Martin and Andre Anderson of go kart
fame sharing an old school rear wheel drive Mitsubishi Lancer in second and
third places respectively.
JA3 class sprint championship leader Dean Corrodus also had a wonderful day
in his Honda Civic Type R. Although he had an off on his first run and did not
complete his third run due to a sheared axle, a committed second run time of 2
min 11.710 sec was good enough to lead the overall front wheel drive (FWD) class
at the time by some 2½ seconds. The time eventually stood up for the JA3 class
win and third overall fastest FWD. His "Dew Crew" teammate Pernell Fitz-Coy in
his Toyota Starlet placed second in class, posting a fastest time of 2 min 12.580 sec.
Third in class was Bobby Marshal in the Mitsubishi Mirage RS. Keith Saunders,
Michael Delfosse, Patrick Powell and Marvin Porteous completed the class.
The most feared 2WD car to compete in the JA2 class in Jamaica was brought
to bear on the competition in the class for cars having an engine displacement
of 1401 to 1600 cc, as Tarik Minott stepped up his Driver's Championship bid
one level with the debut of the Miphone Suzuki Ignis, replacing his Toyota
Starlet as his weapon of choice. He had a spin on his first run but was able
to recover and eventually posted a blistering third run time of 2 min 09.12 sec,
the only two wheel drive car to dip below the 2 min 10 second barrier. Raj
Jadusingh brought his Mitsubishi Mirage RS to second place, just under 6 seconds
clear of Richard Chan's Toyota Corolla GT sedan in third. David Anderson, Ian
Edwards, James March, Troy Riley , Michelle Delfosse and Gordon McDowell
completed the class.
The rear wheel drive Toyota Starlets of Alan Chen and Jeremy Groves did not
take the start of the event as after completing the convoy run both drivers
decided against subjecting their cars to the abuse of the jumps on the far
stretch of the course.
With four events to go in the sixteen event Jamaica Millennium Motoring
Club's 2006 Rally Sport Driver's Championship, Dean Corrodus has further
extended his lead in the standings, having now gained 1180 points. Second
place is a tie between Rajendra Jadusingh and Tarik Minott, both on 1000 points
and in third place is Pernell Fitz-Coy with 980 points. All four competitors
drive 2 wheel drive cars in either the JA2 or JA3 classes, and a thrilling home
stretch run is expected of the quartet.
Sprint #5 was made possible with the kind cooperation of Tru Juice, Kir Dex
Transportation Services, Gentle Care Ambulance Services, Mountain Dew and
members of the Jamaica Millennium Motoring Club. The next event on the rally
sport calendar will be the second dirt rally of the season on October 22 at
a venue to be announced.

JMMC/Kir Dex/Tru Juice Sprint #5
The Jamaica Millennium Motoring Club's (JMMC) Kir Dex Transportation
Services/Mountain Dew National Sprint Championship serves up something new
and something old when it visits the Bybrook stage of the Tru Juice orange
plantations in Bog Walk, St. Catherine on Sunday, September 10, 2006,
starting at 10 am, for the Kir Dex/Tru Juice/JMMC Sprint #5, the
penultimate sprint of the 2006 season.
As the sprint championship nears its end, meet organizer Larry
Henriques has decided to place his bets on the tried and proven and has
along with track designer Mike Fennel come up with a challenging sprint
course within the Bybrook stage of the Tru Juice property, better known
for high speed rallying action. This is nothing new however, as the
orange groves were used as sprint tracks in the late 80's, when Ford
Escorts, rotary powered Mazdas and rear wheel drive Toyota Starlets
dominated local racing. The older generation can fondly recall names
like Paul Chong, Colin Whittingham, Raynor King, Peter Moodie and the
like battling it out in their sliding rear wheel drive cars, sometimes
hanging it out a bit too far and becoming intimately acquainted with a
fruit laden tree!
The younger crop of drivers that are battling it out nowadays for championship points in both the sprint and overall rally sport driver's championships would only have seen this type of course on the now famous Bog Walk or Rally Jamaica events, where the instructions of a co driver are effective in determining the speeds that are attained there. With no co drivers allowed on a sprint, it will be the driver that learns the course quickest and adapts his/her driving style to effectively match the conditions that will be victorious on the day. The usual complaint of local knowledge should be thrown out on this event, as it will be every man/woman for themselves, significantly upping the competitive nature of the event, providing an unmatched thrill for competitors as they try to out do each other and spectators who witness these antics and get hoarse from cheering the drivers on!
Overall and Class JA8 sprint championship leader Jeffrey Panton would dearly love to consolidate his lead, as would Mountain Dew's Dean Corrodus in the overall rally sport driver's championship to add to their successes at the recent Raynor King Memorial stages rally, where Panton returned to his rally winning ways, (his last previous victory being at Lydford way back in 2003) and Corrodus posted his third successive victory at that location. Panton has turned his fortunes around and has enjoyed the top step of the podium at Ironshore, Frome and Morelands this year, while finishing third at the second Vernamfield sprint and in the Lloyd's of Montego Bay/Mountain Dew Rally at the start of the season. Corrodus has been first in class JA3 more often than not at both rally and sprint events and has forged a healthy lead in both the JA3 sprint championship and the overall driver's championship for both the JMMC and the Montego Bay Motoring Club (MBMC). It is expected that these two will be faced with strong challenges from their competitors for overall and class victories in the four-wheel drive and two wheel drive categories respectively.
To get to the event, turn in to the town of Bog Walk at the round about after coming out of the Bog Walk Gorge coming from a southerly direction or if approaching from the North (Ocho Rios/Moneague end) at the Tastee restaurant. Turn left immediately at the intersection and then take the first right, which crosses a set of train tracks. Proceed on this road for about a mile and the venue is on the right. This is the same road that leads to Barry, one of the alternate routes to the Bog Walk gorge.
The event is being sponsored by Kir Dex Transportation Services Ltd, Tru Juice, Mountain Dew, KFC, Xsomo Ja. Ltd., Bell Communications and is organized by the Jamaica Millennium Motoring Club. Start time is 10 am.
JMMC/MBMC Raynor King Memorial Stages Rally
The JMMC/MBMC Raynor King Memorial Stages rally is
scheduled to take place on Sunday, August 20, in the cane fields of Frome,
on the sprawling Georges Plain in the parish of Westmoreland.
The event has become a favorite of drivers in the
rally sport series, as the cane field roads are well kept and meticulously
prepared for the event. Add to that the cushioning effect that the tall
sugarcane has on a competitor's vehicle if perchance said competitor gets
overzealous and has an off road excursion. This year the event date has
been moved forward to August 20 from the original late October date, as
the event has been adversely affected by rain both in its preparation
stages and running over the past few years.
Rally championship leaders
Doug "Hollywood" Gore/Mark "Nello" Nelson in their Evolution 8 are
expected to do well against rivals Jeffrey "Fudgie" Panton/Justin Morin in
their Evolution 9, as these two are locked in a battle for all time rally
wins. Richard Rerrie/Neil Baugh are rumored to be ready to return to
competitive rallying action, as well as Leslie "Fattaz" Madden/Robert
Dehaney, both in Suabaru Imprezas from the RMS Racing stables.
Haresh "Mad Ram" Ramchandani/Colin "Stuffy"
Chambers will add muscle to the Mitsubishi charge, as will Raj
Jadusingh/David Anderson and Bobby Marshal/Thomas Hall in the 2wd classes,
both driving their Mitsubishi Mirages. Rory King/Winston Dawson are
another Mitsubishi team expected to compete, but they stand out from the
rest in that Rory is intent on winning the event that is a memorial to his
dad, the late, great Raynor King. This would be a stellar achievement, as
the Rory has yet to add the first place trophy of this event to a position
of pride on his mantle.
Look for keen sideways driving action from the
likes of Pernell Fitz-Coy/Marvin Porteous in a Toyota Starlet, Tarik
Minott/Peter Clarke (Miphone Toyota Starlet), Richard Chan (Toyota Corolla
GT), Michael and Michelle Delfosse with their respective co drivers Warren
Lamey and Xanu Field (Seat Ibiza and Isuzu Gemini), the McDowell brothers
(in either their Mazda 323 GTr or the F2 Hyundai Coupe) and Team GRD
Racing, flying the Suzuki flag high. Don't forget driver's championship
and 2WD rally championship leaders Dean "Duct Tape" Corrodus and Leroy
"Ice" Spence as they try to consolidate their lead in the standings while
trying not to blend in too well with the foliage, as their Mountain Dew
liveried Honda Civic Type R will have a distinct camouflage advantage
against the rest! Corrodus with former co driver
Fitz-Coy have been unbeaten at Frome in the 2WD classes the last two times
the rally has been run there, and with new co driver Spence, Corrodus is
equipped to make it a "three peat".
The event is sponsored by KFC, Petcom, Digicel,
Sam Bull/Quic Aid Wrecking Service, Carsmart Auto Traders, China Motors,
Knutsford Express, Lloyd's of Montego Bay, Pharmaton & Ginsana Natural
health products, Coral Gardens Shell, Savanna la mar Shell, Xsomo, The

JMMC/MBMC Carsmart Auto/China Motors Sprint #4
*** LATE BREAKING NEWS *** LATE BREAKING NEWS
***
SPRINT #4 MOVED TO
MORELAND: This is to advise that the JMMC/MBMC Sprint #4
originally scheduled for the Badda Badda Raceway in Priory, St. Ann
for August 1, has been moved to the Moreland Raceway in Sign, St. James.
This is as a result of persistent rain in the St. Ann area over the past
few days which has caused a deterioration in the track surface. We regret
any inconvenience that this may cause but look forward to an exciting
event tomorrow.
ORIGINAL STORY:
The Carsmart Auto Traders/China Motors
Sprint #4 takes place on
Tuesday August 1, Emancipation Day, at the scenic Badda Badda Raceway in
Priory, St. Ann, conveniently nestled between the Chukka Cove equestrian
center and Richmond Estate, the new home of Reggae Sunsplash.
The Priory area comes alive with
not only the throbbing beat of reggae bands but the roar of engines from
racecars in the Jamaica Millennium Motoring Club’s (JMMC) and Montego Bay
Motoring Club’s (MBMC) Rallysport championship in the long holiday strewn
week that starts with Emancipation Day on the 1st and ends on the 7th with
Independence Day. The garden parish of St. Ann plays host to two motor
racing events, as besides the sprint on the 1st at Badda Badda, the
circuit racers take to the Dover track in the Jamaica Race Driver’s Club
(JRDC) Independence of Speed event on Monday the 7th.
New leaders of the rally sport championship Tarik
Minott in the Miphone Toyota Starlet and Dean Corrodus in the Mountain Dew
Honda Civic Type R will again face stiff competition in the JA2 and JA3
classes respectively, in addition to battling each other for overall two
wheel drive (2WD) supremacy. 2WD Sprint championship leader Raj Jadusingh
and his Team Xpress stable mates as well as a full complement of Team
MoBay Racing 2WD contenders and others from the JMMC and MBMC should make
the going tough for these two.
The rear wheel drive (RWD) contingent should offer
much excitement, as the St. Ann track regulars go head to head with the
likes of Alan Chen, Jeremy Groves and Maurice Whittingham, all in Toyota
Starlets. The local based Ford Escort of John Black will face a good
challenge from the JMMC/MBMC regulars.
Recent Kir Dex Transportation Rally winner Douglas
“Hollywood” Gore will try to add another sprint event win to his leading
tally of fifteen (15) rally wins, but surely Jeffrey Panton, his long time
rival who is second in the tally of all time rally wins, will be the first
in line to try to upstage Gore. Add to this mix Daryl King, winner of the
first Sprint of the 2006 season and Haresh Ramchandani in the
Shopsmart/China Motors JN8 Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution 8 who will try to
uphold sponsor’s honor at the event, and the stage is set for an exciting
return to the dirt, as the second half of the motor racing season gets
“down and dirty” in the loose stuff.
Gates open at 10 am and admission is $300 adults
and $100 children. The event is made possible by China Motors, Carsmart
Auto Traders, Pharmaton and Ginsana Natural health Products, Lloyd’s of
Montego Bay, Mountain Dew, Bearings and Seals Automotive Superstores,
Automotive Art, Tropical Battery and Leroy’s Auto Glass.

Tarmac Rally #2 set for Mandeville
The JMMC/KIR-DEX Tarmac Rally #2 is set to take
place in Mandeville on Sunday July 16, 2006. The event, which was
previously expected to take place in Treasure Beach, St Elizabeth, was
recently confirmed to be taking place in Mandeville, Manchester. When
asked about the change in location, JamaicanSportHonda.com was not given a
specific reason, but was told that a number of factors could have
influenced the decision to move the rally, including prevailing road
conditions along the route originally slated for the event.
The start point for the rally will be at the KFC’s
Mandeville branch, and is expected to start at 9:00 am sharp, with stages
to be run in Mile Gully (Skull Point), Jackass Hill and Somerset to Medina
(Buyland). There will be a run of 9 stages for the day (3 runs per
stage).
Applications for entry opened on Monday, July 3
and will close on Friday July 14 at 4 pm. Entry fee for the event will be
$10,000.00. A copy of the supplementary regulations is available here. Provisional results will be
available one hour after the close of the rally at KFC Mandeville. The
sponsor of the rally is KIR-DEX Transportation Services Ltd.
JRDC Labour Day Race Meet Cancelled
The JRDC Labour Day Race Meet scheduled for May 23
at the Dover Raceway in St. Ann has been cancelled. The cancellation was
called as some of the cars that were expected to be racing are not yet
ready following the highly successful “Carnival of Speed” held on Easter
Monday, 17 April, 2006. “Some of the cars got some damage at the last meet
and have not been fully brought back as yet,” said Peter Rae. “We have
instead decided to have a Labour Day clean-up of the area. There will be
some rehabilitation work being done as well.”
“We will be working with some students from JAGAS
in cleaning the area and preparing for the next scheduled meet which will
be the Independence Day Race Meet on August 6. We still want to have four
meets for the year, so there could be a meet and tune planned for some
time in June. Otherwise we could possibly look bringing back a December
meet.”
The next meet on the JMMC Calendar is the JMMC
Dexterity 3 to be held on June 11 at the Advanced Driver Training
Center, Lakes Pen, St. Catherine, while the next scheduled Dover meet will
be on Independence Day, August 6, 2006.
JMMC/Kir-Dex Transportation National Sprint Championship Sprint #3 Report & Results
The Vernamfield Double, Leg 2, the third Sprint
event in the Jamaica Millennium Motoring Club’s Kir Dex Transportation
Services National Sprint Championship series was successfully run at the
Vernamfield airstrip in Clarendon on Sunday, May 7 under the scorching
conditions on the plains of Vere, Clarendon.
Sponsors Kir Dex Transportation Services provided
a total of twelve flatbed trailers for fans to enjoy an elevated view of
the mile long track, while Mountain Dew and KFC joined in to provide
refreshment for the marshals and event workers.
The JA 1 class was a straight battle between
Barrington Golding and Damian Edwards sharing the GRD Racing Suzuki Swift,
with Golding getting the better of Edwards in a best time of 2.17.06.
The drive of the day for many fans who witnessed
the event was put down by Tarik Minott in the Miphone/Kir Dex
Transportation Services/Oxford Service Center Toyota Starlet who did well
for his and the event series sponsor by posting a blistering time of
2.01.18 in the first run, which was the 3rd fastest time of the day at the
end of the first run! Many an Evolution driver was worried at the pace of
the normally aspirated front wheel drive 1587cc Starlet, which was taken
to the test by it’s much improved young driver. Minott eventually bettered
his time to post a 1.58.88 time, a full six seconds faster than the time
he posted in winning the class at the first leg of the series! He has
attributed his improvement to being more comfortable with his car and
having gotten practice in the faster, more capable Suzuki Ignis, which he
is entered to compete in at next month’s Rally Barbados. Second in class
was Raj Jadusingh in a time of 2.05.71, having significantly improved his
latest Mirage RS acquisition, this writer gamely referring to it as a Type
R Mirage, what with its 5 lug hubs, 4 throttle bodies and Lancer Evolution
parts throughout. Third in class was Andrew Forsythe in a Honda CRX
(2.07.97).
The JA3 class saw Bobby Marshal scoring his maiden
victory in class in his Motor Sales & Service, Singer, Eden Gardens,
PPG paints Mitsubishi Mirage RS (2.06.61) to get the better of his rivals.
Pernell Fitz-Coy was second in his Toyota Starlet sponsored by Mountain
Dew/Mr. A/C/Island Products/Maran Supplies/Anya’s Maternity & Newborn
Plus (2.07.14) while his “Dew Crew” teammate Dean Corrodus (Mountain Dew
Honda Civic Type R) was third in 2.08.53.
Ferdinand Anderson (2.01.14 in his NG Racing
prepared Ishimoto Works Mitsubishi Mirage) narrowly won the very
competitive JA4 class from three very impressive drivers, the first being
Thomas Hall in a Toyota Turbo Starlet (2.01.36) and the other two being
his sons Andre (2.03.62) and Martin (2.04.90) who shared a rear wheel
drive Mitsubishi Lancer.
The exciting JC1 class for open class cars was
again won by Tedroy Burton, this time in his new turbo charged Murray’s
Auto Developments Honda Civic Type R (1.58.73), just edging out his car
builder and tuner Xavier Murray who shared his car (1.59.55). Third in
class was another Mandeville resident, Jeremy groves, who drove his Impact
Industries Rear wheel drive turbocharged Toyota Starlet to stop the clocks
at 2.03.83.
Class JN8 had Junior Barnes competing with his
nephew Andre Weatherly, both sharing the West Med Pharmaceuticals/Mekyah
Jamaica Spring Water Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution 5. Uncle Junior came out
on top with a time of 2.00.63 to nephew Andre’s 2.11.08.
A similar family tussle was occurring in the JA7
class, as Noel Golding Jnr. (2.02.63) in the GRD Racing Suzuki Swift Turbo
4wd got the better of his dad Noel Snr. (2.08.74), with Gordon McDowell
driving the Mack Attack Racing McDowell’s Texaco Mazda 323 Gtr finishing
third (2.23.80).
Tanee Green was the sole competitor in the JN3
class and finished with a best time of 2.37.94 in the Mack
Attack/Meshugata Racing Hyundai Coupe.
The JA8 class saw 2004/2005 JMMC Rallysport
Drivers Champion Gary Gregg in the KFC Ford Focus WRC competing for the
first time in 2006 and immediately return to his winning ways of last
season, as though he stalled the car on the line for each of his three
timed runs, he did not break the timing beam and as such was able to
refire the car and post the fastest time in each, with his third run
yielding a best 1.50.55 to put his NG Racing stable mate Peter Moodie Jr.
in the For Sale Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution 6 in second place (1.53.30)
and Sprint 2 winner Jeffrey Panton in his Air Jamaica Cargo/Catherine’s
Peak/Dr. Glass/Bearings and Seals Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution 9 third in
1.55.98. Gregg was amazing in his seemingly effortless drive to the class
and overall win, as he made easy work of the course, the car sliding
around a few times as Gregg really put the pedal to the metal.
The three-lap championship run was more of the
same as the top three finishers were again Gregg (2.45.69), Moodie
(2.48.72) and Panton (2.51.75). The fastest rear wheel drive car in this
section was Jeremy Groves while the fastest front wheel drive car was
Ferdinand Anderson.
The event was made possible by the Jamaica
Millennium Motoring Club in association with Kir Dex Transportation
Services, Mountain Dew and KFC, with assistance from Lance and Judith
Henriques, Chris Smellie, Rosetta Dawes, Maria Lewis, the Khan family, the
Jamaica Marshalling Club, The Jamaica Red Cross Society, Team JAGDYB
Friendship Racing and www.purefunracing.com.

Kir-Dex Transportation Services/JMMC Sprint
#3
The Jamaica Millennium Motoring Club (JMMC) in
association with Kir-Dex Transportation Services, Mountain Dew, Radio 92
FM, TVJ and Kentucky Fried Chicken proudly presents “The Vernamfield
Double, Leg 2”, on Sunday, May 7, 2006, starting at 10 am.
This event is the last tarmac surface sprint race
on the sixteen (16) event JMMC rally sport calendar for 2006, and will be
staged at the location most famous for speed, the old Vernamfield airfield
in Clarendon, site of many history making speed tests of varying sorts
through the years. A challenging circuit defined by cones and tires is
laid out on the long concrete runway and presents a technical challenge
for the competitors as well as a “shiver-down-the-spine” thrill for
spectators as the cars are driven fearlessly on the very fast course.
Amazing feats of daring and driver skill, unattainable at other tracks,
seem to be the norm for this venue, as the cornering capabilities of the
cars are exercised to the maximum, with cars regularly going up on two
wheels due to extreme cornering instead of the tires losing grip and
causing the car to slide!
A strong two-wheel drive charge is again expected
as competitors from leg one return determined to conquer the track. MAD
Racing from Mandeville who took home the fastest two wheel drive award and
threatened to take home the overall prize are now equipped with a new,
turbo charged Honda Civic Type R that impressed many on it’s maiden outing
at Dover Raceway at the Carnival of Speed event, and it’s owner Tedroy
Burton is committed to entertaining his many friends and fans on Jamaica’s
south coast. Recent sprint class winners Jeffrey Panton, Dean Corrodus,
Jeremy Groves, Thomas Hall, Warren Lamey, Raj Jadusingh and Junior Barnes
who won the championship run the last time the sprint circus visited this
venue are all gearing up for the airfield run, and should form the core of
close, thrilling and exciting racing come May 7.
Admission is only $300 and food and drink will be
on sale. |
